Biography

John Hargreaves is your local MLA for Brindabella. He is currently the Government Whip in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

John Hargreaves has been Member for Brindabella since 1998 and was a member of the ACT Government Ministry from October 2004 until November 2009.

He has previously held the positions of Minister for Disability and Housing; Minister for Ageing; Minister for Industrial Relations; Minister for Corrections; Minister for Territory and Municipal Services; Minister for Housing; Minister for Multicultural Affairs; Minister for Urban Services, Disability Housing and Community Services, Transport, Police and Emergency Services; Shadow Minister for Urban Services, Transport, Police and Emergency Services, Government Business Enterprises; and assistant to the Leader of the Opposition on Indigenous Affairs and Multiculturalism.

Mr Hargreaves' previous Parliamentary positions include Government Whip; Chair of the Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on Community Services and Social Equity; Deputy Chair, Standing committee on Legal Affairs; Deputy Chair, Standing Committee on Justice and Community Safety; and Deputy Chair, Standing Committee on Planning and the Environment, and a Member of the Standing Committee on Administration and Procedure.

Mr Hargreaves worked in the public service for 29 years in the Departments of Health and Education. He received the Long and Dedicated Service Award for public service in the ACT in 1994. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and is a Justice of the Peace.
